Brass Is Back: The Newest Interior Design Trend of 2017

October 31, 2017

brass is back lamp stairsBelieve it or not, Brass Is Back!  It brings a soft warm glow, but not the shiny glare of brass from the past.  Brass may be featured in a softly brushed finish, mat, or aged look!  It’s in faucets, lighting, accents, lamps, accent furniture pieces, end caps on sofa legs, and the list continues to grow.

Brass Is Back:  How I Used Brass to Stage a Home for Sale

Recently I staged an occupied house for a design client who needed to sell her home.  It was a nice property in a great neighborhood, but was still in slightly dated paint colors, wallpaper, and the design elements of the early 1990s.  Since Brass is back and the newest metallic, I was determined to play off of this and here is how that panned out!

  • brass is back fireplace tallI brought in Asian and traditional elements tinged in brass to create a new ambiance. We used the client’s current dining and living room furnishings. I placed an Asian styled wood artifact in an aged brass finish in front of the fireplace (which retained its original shiny brass trim).  Instead of removing or painting this trim, it was accented by adding more brass finishes in the area.  The small nondescript items under the art above the fireplace mantle were removed and tall stately candle holders (trimmed in brass) were placed there instead.
  • The entire home was repainted in two fresh new colors – Sedate Gray SW6169 and Sea Salt SW6204, both Sherwin Williams colors. These hints of color had an amazing effect based upon the lighting based on the time of day.  The color waived between hints of taupe and gray and hints of blue and green.  These totally transformed the areas. Although Sedate Gray and Sea Salt were not colors that the owner would have selected, she did find herself falling in love with them as her space became all new.  Don’t ever forget that paint is the least expensive, but most dramatic quick change that one can do in a home.
  • The other additions of the golden touch of brass was in our two story foyer light fixture, in lamps or accents on lamps/shades and in a mirror featuring golden leaves protruding around the edge. It was an amazing change and will hopefully help this client to sell her home quickly and for a good price.

Brass is Back, But There Are Other Ways to Feature Your Home

brass is back light fixtureStaging or Re-design does NOT mean that you have to replace everything, but select the things you love and build around those.  Brass is back, but brass can be a featured look or an accent only, you decide!  AND if you can’t bring yourself to use Brass, we can still deal with that, too.   My philosophy has always been that “Your home should reflect You and Your personality.”  No matter the direction you desire, allow me to assist you in taking it beyond your expectations!

Lastly, got a question for you guys!  Do you throw away lamps that quit working or are slightly out of fashion or even those with broken shades?  Email your response to vickie@floortoceilngdesigns.com and I’ll tell you what you should/could do instead. Until our next issue, happy decorating!!!
